AGE REQUIREMENTS
PWNS serves children from age three to five. To enroll, a child must meet the September 1st cut-off date established by the State of Indiana. There is a one year program for three years olds and a two year opportunity for four and five year olds. This way a child may attend PWNS for one, two or three years, depending on age and development.
DAILY PROGRAM
Each class has a daily schedule that includes:
Activities in the following areas occur frequently: art, music, small and large motor coordination, socio-dramatic play, language development, pre-math skills, finger plays, and problem solving.
SUPERVISION
Presbyterian Weekday Nursery School operates under the guidance of the Christian Education Committee of the Session of the First Presbyterian Church through a Nursery School Board. Our teaching staff consists of professionals who hold teaching degrees or certificates.
PHILOSOPHY
The careful and tender nurturing of young children’s hearts and minds is our number one priority. Presbyterian Weekday Nursery School (PWNS) provides a rich and stimulating environment that allows children to grow socially, emotionally, mentally, physically and spiritually. The objective is to help each child acquire social skills, self-confidence, initiative, independence, creativity and a life-long enthusiasm for learning. The total development of the individual child is emphasized over the mastery of specific academic skills. PWNS operates in an environment that teaches the children to follow the Golden Rule, and to be aware of God’s love for them.
CURRICULUM
The carefully designed curriculum reflects the stated philosophy and covers units of study about the child’s world, such as family, health, community, nature and the seasons. Curriculum-related activities include suitable songs, stories, field trips, games, learning centers and creative art projects. Dr. David Elkind, a professor of child study and the author of twelve books on the subject, states in Miseducation: Preschoolers at Risk that “workbooks have no place in healthy early childhood education.” He stresses the importance of active learning, in which young children explore their immediate world with all their senses. The educational program at PWNS follows this premise. Thus, there is much learning that takes place during a free play period as children touch and experiment with a wide variety of materials. In addition, the curriculum is carful to provide activities for the children that are developmentally appropriate. The result is a happy and healthy child who is ready for the next stage of growth.
The yearly calendar coincides with that of the School City of Mishawaka.
There is a $30.00 non-refundable registration fee that secures a child’s place in the school.
